Bashas’ Supermarket named a 12-year-old from Queen Creek, Arizona, and adults from Phoenix and Mesa, Arizona, as the winners of this year’s doughnut flavor contest — just in time for National Doughnut Day on June 4. A baklava doughnut and two cream doughnuts took top prizes in Bashas’ sixth annual contest.
Last month, Bashas’ asked children and adults from across the state to come up with the best new global flavors for the grocery store’s doughnut counter. Entries included global flavors inspired by Italy, Greece, Peru and more. A panel of local celebrities then selected the three winning doughnut flavors and awarded grand prizes to a child and two adults.
Braxton B., 12, submitted the winning doughnut in the children’s category. His design, an Italian Kinder Funky doughnut, is filled with cream, topped with hazelnut chocolate sauce and sprinkled with crushed wafers.
Heather Hirsch of Phoenix submitted the winning doughnut in the adults’ category. Her Greek-style baklava donut is made with cinnamon, topped with honey sauce and topped with chopped pistachios.
Mesa resident Kristen Pierce, who works at Bashas Supermarket at Baseline and Crismon roads, submitted the winning donut in the Member/Employee category. Her Peruvian-style Delirium donut is filled with Bavarian cream, topped with chocolate frosting, sprinkled with chopped pecans and topped with caramel.
All three winning donuts will be available at Bashas’ bakeries statewide starting Friday, June 4, National Donut Day. Customers who buy a dozen donuts at Bashas’ on National Donut Day will receive six extra donuts for free.
Bashas’ will also donate 10 percent of donut sales on June 4 to the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army established National Donut Day in June 1938 to honor volunteers who provide sweet treats to soldiers on the front lines.
In addition to being named Official Bashas Donut Ambassadors, Braxton, Heather and Kristen will each receive a dozen donuts per month for a year, as well as $500 in prizes including Bashas Grocery Store gift cards, baking/cooking supplies, and family fun activities.
