It’s National Doughnut Day again—a celebration of fried dough, sugar, and calories. It’s the delicacy that Homer Simpson never tires of, that will forever be associated with police officers, the nightmares of dietitians, the hatred of copy editors (doughnuts? doughnuts? what the hell?!), and the money-making of dentists.
The holiday is held on the first Friday of June every year. Started by the Salvation Army in 1938, National Doughnut Day was originally a way to raise money to help the poor and to honor the women who provided doughnuts to soldiers during World War I. Today, it’s mostly a chance to get free food.
