Since moving to Canada in 2024, I’ve been slowly savoring the country’s most iconic treats—and few foods are more Canadian than Tim Hortons donuts.
I started with the classic double donut, which was a hit, and then moved on to the surprisingly delicious Ryan’s scrambled eggs, a dish I made with Ryan Reynolds. The one exception, though, was the 9×9 Wayne Gretzky, which nearly broke my teeth.
So, naturally, it was time to move on to the real staple: the donut.
To find out what ice cream Canadians really love, I consulted my colleagues at Narcity and MTL Blog for their unfiltered recommendations. The rave reviews were: “The sour cream sauce will keep you drooling all day,” and “You have to try the vanilla sauce—it’s a classic!”
Based on their recommendations, I tried a total of 11 donuts: Apple Pie, Boston Cream, Old Fashioned, Honey Crunch, Chocolate Sauce, Sour Cream Frosted, Vanilla Sauce, Honey Sauce, Chocolate Frosted, Sugar Ring, and Maple Sauce.
My original order had the Double Chocolate Donut on it, but the nearest store was sold out—which meant I had no choice. I substituted the Double Chocolate Donut with maple dip and added the Sugar Ring Donut because a friendly Tim’s employee told me I could get a discount if I bought more. Less talk, more action.
So, after nearly a dozen donuts, here’s my honest ranking from best to worst—no nostalgia, no bias, just pure first-time feedback.
