Dawn Foods has created what the company calls the first sourdough doughnut mix.
Made from sourdough and yeast, the doughnuts have a buttery sourdough flavor with a soft, light, and fluffy texture.

Demand for sourdough has grown 11% over the past few years, according to research from Datassentials cited by Dawn.

Dawn’s sourdough donut journey began in June 2019 when the company invited five of the nation’s most sought-after pastry chefs to compete in a “Donut Co-creation Contest” at Dawn’s Innovation Studio.
Mathew Rice, Executive Pastry Chef at Niche Media Group in Nashville, won the contest with his sourdough donut idea. The idea met the four criteria for new product development: taste, texture, versatility and timeliness.
“As a baker, I came to the idea of the sourdough donut because I wanted to expand my baked offerings beyond traditional desserts,” said Rice. “Sourdough can be used in both sweet and savory creations—which are very popular with Millennial and Gen Z consumers. In my experience, this innovative approach can inspire new ideas and possibilities.”
The mix can be used to create both sweet and savory creations, such as sourdough jelly donuts, frosted sourdough sweet rolls, and honey butter fried chicken sandwich rolls, giving bakers versatility and countless ways to innovate their menus.
Bakers can purchase Dawn’s sourdough donut mix, the latest addition to Dawn’s full line of donut mixes, fillings and frostings, with new gourmet and vegetarian offerings.
